Today is egg day and it sure is hot as blue blazes outside. Life doesn’t stop just because the heat index is higher than the temperature gauge on the back porch. My heart goes out to anyone who has to work out in this heat. All my flowers completely wilt until the sun goes down as if to say, “I give!” Even my chickens are panting with their beaks open sitting in any corner of shade that they can find. So what is egg day? Egg day is the day when I wash all their freshly laid eggs and then bless a few friends with fresh, organic eggs to enjoy. The summer months are the best season for fresh eggs and heat. So what’s a gal to do to get through egg days, hot weather, and life? Here’s what I do.
Hydrate
I cannot stress enough to anyone these sweltering days to STAY HYDRATED! Drink plenty of water every moment you can think to do it. Take a drink of water, lemonade, or iced tea. Don’t forget to add a glacier of ice to it for it to be refreshing. Nothing can quench your thirst and refresh like sipping on an ice-cold drink. It is why sweet tea and lemonade is a staple in the southern states. People living in the South know the importance of staying hydrated in the summer heat. Gatorade is great to keep your electrolytes balanced. The heat can really put a hurting on you if you don’t take extra measures to hydrate yourself. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real so do yourself a huge favor and hydrate yourself and everyone around you. Hydrate!
Eat Smaller Meals
When you eat smaller meals in the summer months you bless your body. I am not referring to dieting. By eating smaller portions you are allowing your body to cope easier in the heat. It takes energy to digest what we eat. The heat alone can make you sick but if you overeat then you add to your misery. My husband who works out in this heat almost every day will generally skip eating and just drink water and Gatorade by the gallons. Eat small, light meals full of all the fresh produce that is now available in abundance.
Play In The Water
Playing in the water doesn’t have to be only for children. If you have to be outside in this heat then do it by water. The beach, the lake, a pool, the river, or even the water hose sprinkler… you get the idea! Use the kids or grandkids as an excuse if you have to. Rediscover your inner child and have an old-fashioned water balloon or water gun fight and afterward eat popsicles. Playing in the water is one of the best ways to beat the heat.
Stay in the Air Conditioning
Staying in the A/C is also a smart option to avoid the heat of the day. Plan all your errands and outings early morning or early evening. Yard work and mowing are best done when the sun is on its way in or on its way out. Jogging or walking outside should follow suit. It is just too dang hot to try to do the big stuff in the noonday sun. Take this time to enjoy an air-conditioned place and stay cool.
Make Homemade Ice Cream
Nothing beats the heat like some homemade ice cream! Utilize the wonderful berries and fruits of summer and healthy ingredients to make this enjoyable refreshing treat. Without all the preservatives of store bought cousins, this is an A++ on my summer bucket list. When is the last time you made homemade ice cream?
Conclusion
You may not have chickens to have an egg day but I am sure that no matter where you are in the world, summer is unbearably hot. Life doesn’t stop in the midst of all this heat and so why not make the most of it? The kids are out of school and looking for something fun to do. Water play is one of the best types of summer fun, even at your age! Yes, I said that! LOL! One thing that I have decided to do as I age is enjoy life as much as I can, as long as I can! That includes playing in the water on a hot summer day. One day I might not be able to, but until then, I will play in the water like a big kid. Life still happens on egg days in the heat! Stay cool ya’ll!
Staying hydrated is a must for summer for sure.
Always hydrate~
