Fur Baby Friday – Snow Pup Problems

"A righteous man regardeth the life of his beasts: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." Proverbs 12:10 (KJV)

January can bring some definite snow pup problems and challenges for our fur babies when they have to go outside. Simple walks or potty breaks become an exercise of Olympic feats! When temperatures dip, the ground ices over, and deep snow blankets that ice it can be treacherous. It can be as much a hazard for our fur babies as it is for us. Keep that in mind next time your tiny fur baby looks at you like you are crazy nuts for asking her to go outside to do her business. “Ain’t no way Mama!” might be her quick response. Snow pup problems are real for your fur babies.

Larger, Double-Coated Fur Babies

Not ALL fur babies have such acute snow pup problems. However, small or short-haired fur babies have real concerns about the cold, snow, and ice. My large, 140-pound Great Pyrenees mix has no problem lumbering out into the cold. He has a great fur coat and a huge body mass to keep him warm. When Salty Dawg encountered the snow for the first time he was cautiously curious. After he figured it out, it was no biggie. He was happy to go out, do his business, roll around in the snow, and run a lap or two. Snow was NOT a problem for this extra large fur baby. This fur baby loved the snow!

Smaller, Single-Coated Fur Babies

Smaller breeds, like Mocha, can be overwhelmed by the volume of snow. Their snow pup problems are legit. Shorter-legged fur babies end up in shoulder-to-shoulder snow or even a possible avalanche just to do their business. Hopefully, you have shoveled a clear toilet spot with a pathway for your fur babies. Another snow pup problem is melting snow. Melted snow creates wet feet and wet fur causing frigid weather to lower body temperatures faster. Consider investing in snow pup booties and paw wax to protect their feet from frostbite. Fur babies need to be protected from the weather just like people. A fleece-lined vest or coat will offer more protection from cold snow pup problems for your fur baby.

Conclusion

While the winter struggle is real, remind yourself that this too shall pass. Winter turns into spring and all the snow and ice will be gone. In the meantime, gear your fur babies up and keep the praise and treats coming. And don’t forget to shovel an outdoor bathroom space to make everyone’s life easier! Stay warm and well folks! Blessings!
