We all could use a little luxurious indulgence for our winter hands right about now. Winter is harsh on our hands. Constant hand washing, hand sanitizing, the cold, and disinfecting our homes take a heavy toll on them. I don’t know about you, but when my knuckles start feeling like sandpaper it is time, way past time actually, to do more for them. This is a luxurious indulgence for your winter hands that is simple and so easy to do. Let’s do it!
A Few Fun Facts
The skin on the palms of our hands is quite different from the skin on the top of our hands. The skin on top of our hands does not contain as many sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands produce oil that naturally keeps the skin and hair more supple. Sun exposure and aging thins top hand skin even more. The cuticle area falls into the same boat in the cold winter months. We can see dry, ragged, and torn cuticles that snag on everything we touch. Even our fingerprints are affected by extremely dry and chapped hands in the winter. Are you ready for that luxurious winter hand indulgence yet? I am.
The Healing Touch
Now knowing why our hands are prone to be dry and chapped in the winter how do we promote a healing touch for them? While applying lotion is a wonderful idea, it doesn’t always “heal” our damaged hands. As soon as we wash our hands that moisturizing layer of lotion goes right down the drain and we are right back where we started before applying the lotion. We need to upgrade the plan to something that heals and makes our hands feel smooth because the skin is healthy.
Applying a body oil is a step in the right direction. But be warned, all body oils are not created equal. Everybody’s skin type is a little different. For example, my skin doesn’t absorb petroleum-based Vaseline well. My hands are left feeling rough and greasy leaving oil stains on everything I touch. The lack of biocompatibility makes the absorption problematic for me. I prefer a more natural and plant-based approach like Vitamin E oil, Coconut Oil, and Lavender essential oil. My skin, cuticles, and nails absorb them more easily for an uncomplicated healing touch.
Sanding The Rough Edges
No one can have a luxurious indulgence without sanding down the rough edges first. When it comes to our hands we have to consider the delicate skin on top. Exfoliating with a homemade sugar scrub or a store-bought sugar scrub may not sound like a fun idea but the results afterward are wonderful. Right away the condition of my hands felt better. To make your sugar scrub, mix any type of granule sugar on hand with baby oil or a lotion that you have at home. Rub this mixture, or a store-bought product like it, all over the rough spots on your hands. Wash and then rinse well. With the rough edges sanded away, you are ready for the next step in your luxurious winter hand indulgence.
Simply Luxurious
After being severely chapped I use a few drops of therapeutic grade Lavender essential oil mixed in a carrier base of Vitamin E oil. You can also use coconut oil as a carrier. My skin absorbs these all-natural, plant-based oils much better. I do this particularly at night so that the oils are not dissolved by soap while washing my hands or sanitizing constantly. These healing oils have longer staying power while you sleep. I also apply the same during the day as needed. One last tip for luxurious feeling hands is to wear gloves when cleaning. Household detergents have harsh chemicals that are extremely drying and damaging to your skin. These are simple, inexpensive remedies but they are a luxurious indulgence that you will love for your winter-worn hands. Be blessed!
Best Tip Ever
PS: While I have never sold or promoted anything on my blog before I feel it is important to use a therapeutic-grade pure Lavender essential oil. The healing quality of Lavender just won’t be there if you don’t. I recommend the following two companies for their therapeutic grade of purity without paying a middleman price. I also like both of these companies because they donate a portion of their profits towards worthy causes.
