Let Plants Improve Your Well Being And Happiness

The gray dreariness and inhospitable weather that January and February brings is enough to make anyone feel down. Seasonal Affective Disorder is real. S.A.D. is especially prevalent in geographical areas where there is less sunshine for longer periods of time. Adding a few green indoor houseplants will remind you that winter is only temporary. Houseplants improve your overall well being by bringing color, joy, and a living thing to care for and focus on other than all the drabness of nature sleeping outside. Houseplants may not solve all your winter woes but it sure will brighten up your heart and the inside of your home.

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”

Genesis 1:11 (KJV)

Adopt A Plant Buddy

Choosing a plant is like adopting a buddy. I know you have heard of people talking to their plants as they water them. There may be something to that! Plants breathe in the carbon dioxide that we exhale and then release oxygen back to us. God created this very symbiotic relationship between two living species to benefit both. Houseplants like the light of sunshine and look forward for spring to arrive just as much as we do. Finding a compatible plant for your schedule and lifestyle is easy enough. Start with a plant buddy that is easy to care for. Cactus require little watering and are the perfect something to sit on a window sill. Some varieties of cactus like the Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera Bridgesii) even bloom in the winter. There are many fantastic houseplants to consider to adopt as a plant buddy. The possibilities are endless.

Garden Catalogs

Chase away the winter blues by planning a garden for the spring. I just love to receive an old fashioned garden catalog in the mail. Flipping through the catalog pages takes my mind off the dreariness of winter and has me dreaming of which seeds to buy or plants to get. Getting a head start on seed planting will give you more mature plants to set out once it does warm up enough to plant your vegetable or flower garden. Garden catalogs are almost as wonderful to browse through as toy catalogs are to kids just before Christmas. Sign up on a few garden catalog mail lists. It will make you and your mailbox happy!

Plant Quick Fix

Okay, so you really don’t want to commit to the care of a plant or feel like your thumb is green enough to try. What do you do? You can still bring in cut flowers and put them in a vase or even a coffee mug. Cut flowers with green leafy stems will still brighten your home and lift your spirits every time you look their way. Buy bundled flowers that can be separated into smaller bouquets to spread their joy around your home. Place them wherever you spend the most time. The kitchen, bathroom, living room, and even your bedroom can showcase the beauty that God creates to bless our hearts, homes, and well being.

Plant Memories

My Mother used to get together with her friends and they would be sharing and exchanging plant clippings, seeds, and flower blooms. They would cheer each on with learned tips and houseplant tricks. I always remember this fondly about my mother. These housewives and neighborhood moms would pass along gardening magazines and catalogs and share what they had on hand. It never cost them much money and all their efforts multiplied. Now that she is no longer with us it makes that memory all the more precious to me. God blessed me with my Mother’s interest and love of growing plants and gardening. It makes me smile as I can remember her gardening as we played close by. Plants improve your well being and happiness in many, many different ways.

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works.”

Hebrews 10:24 (KJV)
