Sparrows In The Coming New Year

As we let the troubles of 2020 slide motionless into the past, the new year will have a continuation of many unsettled problems to contend with. Medical insurance premiums just tripled going into 2021. With COVID19 surging over the cold and flu season that doesn’t make me feel all warm, fuzzy, and wonderful. It is easy to drift into being anxious, concerned, and worried. We do not control these things but they affect us. The only place to find absolute peace is in God’s daily love and care. It fills me with hope knowing that His eye is on the sparrow. That sparrow is you and me.

“Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”

Matthew 6:26 KJV

I am genuinely fond of all types of music but especially of praise and worship songs. Songs of this type lift my heart to gaze into the faithfulness of God instead of focusing in despair over every problem I face. Troubles have a way of accumulating and sandbagging your heart if you let them. In 1 Peter 5:7, the Bible instructs us to, “Cast all your cares on Him; for He careth for you.” So when I begin to feel overwhelmed over any issue, I begin looking for a faith-filled song or hymn to listen to or sing. This enables me to free up my heart. Sparrows sing every morning as well. I am sure that their cheerful chirp lifts the heart of God and everyone who can hear it. The sparrow is not worried about tomorrow, or the troubles to come. The lily’s not thinking about the seasons, the drought or the flood. The tree that’s planted by the water is not phased by the fire. So why should I be?

Let me introduce you to a new song called “Sparrow” by Cory Asbury. I recently heard this on the radio as I was driving. After discovering the name I found the song again on YouTube. I have embedded his song to share with you and brought out some of the lyrics that touched my heart. I hope you take a minute to listen to its message. It helps me to put my worries and concerns into the proper perspective, a powerful tool in these very uncertain days.

The sun’s not worried about the winter ’cause it knows it will soon pass. The light’s not thinking about the darkness or the shadow that it will cast. A heart that is planted in forgiveness doesn’t dwell in the past. So why should I be?

God inhabits the praises of His people. It is a tangible feeling of His presence that lifts every burden off of your shoulders no matter how heavy. His anointing flows during praise and worship inviting us to move closer to Him. The atmosphere changes allowing us to receive strength, wisdom, relief, and grace even in the midst of life’s tragedies. Our hearts can lay down all worries and burdens of life here. It is a place of complete trust in the Lord to handle the solutions to every problem we needlessly carry. Music has always been a powerful genre that crosses generations, cultures, and language barriers. Singing allows our hearts to rest in the hope that God has it under control. Sparrows know this instinctively.

“His Eye Is On The Sparrow” was written in 1905 by Civilla Martin (1866-1948). It is a song that every living soul in the world can relate to and one of my favorite hymns. A very afflicted Christian couple inspired this hymn. They maintained cheerful attitudes throughout life’s struggles that many could not understand. Civilla Martin befriended this couple and after some time she had the courage to ask the wife how they could be so cheerful. The wife had been bedridden for 20 plus years and the husband was crippled. He had to work and care for his wife from a wheelchair. The wife’s replies are the beginning words of this hymn. Civilla Martin wrote many other gospel hymns, several of which are also quite famous. Embedded above is a beautiful rendition of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.”

In Conclusion

Whatever comes in 2021, we can know without a shadow of a doubt, that God is already there. He will watch over the sparrows. We can take refuge in knowing that He will watch over us too. We may not have all the answers nor even know what is coming our way to even prepare for. But God does! So just like little sparrows in the coming new year, let us place our trust and hope in God as well. Luke 12:7 tells us, “Even the very hairs of your head are numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Be blessed in 2021 ladies!

‘Cause you take good care of me. You take good care of me. You know what I need before I even ask a thing. And you hold me in your hands with a kindness that never ends. I’m carried in your love no matter what the future brings. Yeah, you take good care of me.
